The 2019 BMW X3 premium crossover SUV gets a new variant, the rear-wheel-drive sDrive 30i, after a minor facelift. Automatic emergency braking is standard on all three versions, including the all-wheel-drive xDrive 30i and M40i.

The 30i models have a 248-horsepower turbo-4 engine, while the xDrive M40i has a 335-horsepower turbo-6. Both engines are snappy and enjoyable to drive, and they are linked to a fantastic 8-speed automatic transmission. The ride is as smooth as the engine, and the handling is surprisingly nimble for a crossover SUV.

Like other crossovers, the 2019 X3 is tall, with a lot of glass and a more expressive rear end. The light and airy cabin are well-appointed and technologically advanced. The X3 can seat five people, but it's more comfortable for four, and it has a lot of cargo space. In the front, sport seats with considerable bolstering are standard.

Interior

Driving impression

The sDrive30i and xDrive30i's 2.0-litre turbo-4 is a fantastic engine, possibly the best in its class. It produces 248 horsepower and accelerates the X3 to 60 mph in under six seconds. When you floor it, there's a smidgeon of turbo lag, but it's no less fantastic for it.

The X3's standard 8-speed automatic transmission is designed for low-speed, stop-and-go driving. For passing and ascending mountains on the freeway, it answers with rapid upshifts and telepathic downshifts.

Even though the steering is very heavy, especially as perceived through the surprisingly narrow steering wheel, the handling is almost as agile as a sports sedan.

The M40i is a genuine deal, with 335 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque from its turbo-6. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph with all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmission, all while making a statement through its sport exhaust pipes.
